Emma Thompson delivers one of her most vulnerable performances in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, a sharply written comedy-drama that begins with an uncomfortable encounter between two strangers and gradually develops into something far more emotional.

Written by comedian Katy Brand and directed by Sophie Hyde, the film centers on Nancy, a widowed former religious education teacher who has spent most of her adult life fulfilling the roles expected of her — wife, mother, daughter and teacher.

Nancy books a luxurious hotel room and hires Leo Grande, a much younger male escort played by Daryl McCormack.

Thompson convincingly strips away the confidence audiences may associate with her, portraying Nancy as awkward, frightened and painfully self-conscious. Her willingness to appear physically and emotionally exposed becomes central to the character’s journey toward accepting herself.

McCormack matches her as Leo.

At first, he seems completely comfortable with himself and his profession. But as their conversations deepen, cracks begin to appear in that polished exterior, suggesting that Leo is carrying unresolved pain of his own.

Their dynamic gradually shifts from a simple transaction into an unusually intimate connection between two people who have both learned to hide parts of themselves.

More Than a Comedy About Sex

The film certainly finds humor in Nancy’s situation, but its larger themes revolve around aging, confidence, regret and the expectations placed on women.

Nancy has spent decades believing there are things she should not want and boundaries she should never cross. Her meetings with Leo force her to reconsider those assumptions.

Instead of treating an older woman’s sexuality as a punchline, the story allows Nancy’s desires, fears and insecurities to exist without reducing her to a stereotype.
