Greta Gerwig brought one of literature’s most beloved families back to the big screen in 2019, assembling an extraordinary cast led by Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Emma Watson and Florence Pugh for her adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women.

Even before audiences saw the finished film, its first trailer generated enormous excitement. While the footage introduced all four March sisters and the lavish period setting, it was the reunion between Ronan and Chalamet that immediately became one of its biggest talking points.

Saoirse Ronan Takes Centre Stage as Jo March

Ronan leads the story as Jo March, the fiercely independent and unconventional young woman determined to build a life on her own terms.

Alongside her are Emma Watson as the sensible eldest sister Meg, Eliza Scanlen as the gentle and ailing Beth, and Florence Pugh as the artistic and ambitious Amy.

The March family is completed by Laura Dern as their loving mother Marmee, while Meryl Streep takes on the role of the formidable Aunt March.

Together, the cast brings Louisa May Alcott’s famous story of sisterhood, ambition, love and growing up to a new generation.

But another relationship quickly captured attention.

Chalamet plays Theodore “Laurie” Laurence, the charming boy next door who becomes closely connected with the March sisters — particularly Jo.

The casting reunited Chalamet with Ronan following their memorable performances together in Gerwig’s Lady Bird, but this time their characters faced a very different romantic dynamic.

Ronan had previously teased that it would be Chalamet’s character who was left heartbroken this time around, adding another layer of anticipation to their scenes together.

The Trailer Sent Fans Into a Frenzy

When the first footage arrived, viewers immediately reacted to the pair’s chemistry.

Some celebrated simply seeing “Timmy & Saoirse” reunited, while others were already calling for the movie to receive awards before its theatrical release.

The trailer also offered glimpses of the film’s sweeping visual style, the relationships between the March sisters and the complicated romance surrounding Jo and Laurie.

For viewers already familiar with Alcott’s novel, those brief moments were enough to suggest Gerwig wasn’t simply recreating another traditional period drama.

Little Women had already been adapted numerous times before Gerwig took on the material, meaning the filmmaker faced the challenge of making a familiar story feel fresh.

Her cast immediately helped distinguish this version.

Alongside Ronan and Chalamet were Watson, Pugh, Scanlen, Dern and Streep — bringing together established stars and some of the most acclaimed younger performers of their generation.

The combination of that ensemble with Gerwig’s direction made the adaptation one of the most anticipated period films of 2019.

And while the trailer offered plenty to admire, it was the emotional tension between Jo and Laurie that left many viewers counting down to release — particularly those eager to see Ronan and Chalamet sharing the screen once again.
