Meghan Markle’s US Political Ambitions Revealed: From Seeking Kamala Harris’ Senate Seat to Requesting an Oval Office Meeting With Joe Biden

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry reportedly pursued a far more ambitious role in American public life than previously known, with the Duchess of Sussex allegedly seeking consideration for Kamala Harris’ former Senate seat and the couple later requesting a meeting with President Joe Biden in the Oval Office.

The revelations come as Harry and Meghan prepare to move their family back to the UK, six years after leaving royal life and establishing themselves in California.

According to sources cited by The Post, Markle approached California Gov. Gavin Newsom weeks before the 2020 presidential election and sought a meeting because she “wanted to be considered to be appointed” to the Senate seat then held by Harris.

Harris vacated the seat in January 2021 after being elected vice president alongside Biden.

Newsom ultimately chose California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to replace her. Padilla subsequently won a full six-year Senate term in 2022.

A Sussex source strongly denied that Meghan was interested in taking over Harris’ Senate seat, while a spokesman for Newsom did not respond to a request for comment.

However, a memorandum from Newsom’s office that surfaced in February 2021 confirmed that he had held an “introductory meeting” with Harry and Meghan on October 19, 2020.

The governor’s office characterized the meeting as social and did not disclose what was discussed.

The Senate idea would have been highly controversial

Had Meghan actually been appointed to the Senate, her position as a member of the British royal family could have created significant constitutional questions.

The US Constitution prohibits people holding certain foreign titles or offices from accepting benefits, offices or titles from foreign states without congressional consent.

A British royal serving in the US Senate would also have represented an extraordinary departure from America’s republican political tradition.

But the alleged Senate approach was reportedly only one part of a broader effort by Harry and Meghan to establish political connections in Washington.

Harry and Meghan allegedly wanted an Oval Office meeting

In late 2021, the couple reportedly sought a private meeting with then-President Biden in the Oval Office.

According to multiple sources cited by The Post, they also asked to stay at Blair House, the official guest residence traditionally used for visiting foreign heads of state.

The requests were reportedly rejected by White House officials.

One source claimed that allowing the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to meet Biden in the Oval Office could have created a major diplomatic problem with the British government and royal family.

Another source, described as a former Biden aide, said Biden and First Lady Jill Biden did not want to become entangled in the Sussexes’ dispute with the British royal family.

The couple’s representatives denied that they had requested either an Oval Office meeting or accommodation at Blair House.

The Sussexes built connections with Washington insiders

Harry and Meghan reportedly surrounded themselves with advisers who had connections to the Obama administration, including Miranda Barbot, who later became Harry’s chief of staff.

Former Obama White House communications director Jen Psaki was also among the people connected to the couple.

In her 2024 memoir, Psaki recalled an unusual gesture from Meghan: the duchess sent her a box of lemons to her home in Virginia, which Psaki then carried through White House security before delivering them to Jill Biden’s office.

The relationship with the Bidens had deeper roots.

Jill Biden had been a prominent supporter of Harry’s Invictus Games, frequently appearing at the event for wounded service members.

But her attendance became more limited after Biden entered the White House in January 2021, amid concerns about the diplomatic optics surrounding Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal duties.

Meghan also entered the political debate

Meghan’s political involvement was not limited to private meetings.

In September 2020, she and Harry appeared in a video for Time magazine encouraging Americans to vote and reject “hate speech.”

Although they did not explicitly endorse a presidential candidate, the intervention was widely interpreted as favoring Biden.

Then-President Donald Trump responded publicly to the couple’s comments, saying he wished Harry luck.

The following year, Meghan contacted several US senators to lobby for federally mandated paid family leave.

The intervention attracted considerable attention because members of the British royal family traditionally avoid partisan political activity.

Meghan, who remains an American citizen, was nevertheless free to participate in US political advocacy in her personal capacity.

They reportedly even asked about Air Force One

The couple’s attempts to establish links with the US political establishment allegedly continued after their initial political interventions.

Following Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022, Harry and Meghan reportedly asked whether they could return to the United States aboard Air Force One with Biden and other American officials.

The request was rejected.

By then, however, the couple had already become deeply established in California, where they had built a commercial and philanthropic profile independent of the British royal family.

Their Hollywood ambitions included major deals with Netflix and other entertainment ventures, while Meghan later launched her lifestyle brand, As Ever.

Yet their connection to the monarchy continued to generate much of the world’s interest in them.

A political future that never materialized

Ultimately, the reported ambitions never translated into elected office or a formal role within the US government.

Meghan did not receive Harris’ Senate seat, and Harry and Meghan did not secure the high-level White House meeting they reportedly sought.

Their political advocacy also remained limited compared with the influence they might once have hoped to achieve.

Now, with the Sussexes preparing to establish a new base in Britain while retaining their properties in California and Portugal, their earlier American ambitions are being viewed through a very different lens.

The couple spent years attempting to build an identity separate from the monarchy.

Yet their return to Britain is once again placing their royal status at the center of global attention — and raising fresh questions about exactly what role Harry and Meghan ultimately want to play on either side of the Atlantic.
