Five Teenagers Dead After Stolen Car Crashes Head-On Into Innocent Family on Irish Motorway
Five teenage boys lost their lives in a horrific head-on collision on the M9 motorway in County Kildare, Ireland, after driving a stolen BMW the wrong way up the northbound carriageway while attempting to evade police.
The Fatal Crash and Victims
The crash occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning when the high-powered BMW—which had been stolen hours earlier—travelled south up the northbound lanes before slamming into an innocent family’s vehicle.
The five teenagers in the stolen car, all wearing balaclavas, were pronounced dead at the scene. They were identified as Joey Carthy, Alex McCarthy, Jeremy O’Brien, Jack Kennedy, and Kamil Pustkowski, ranging in age from 15 to 18.
Four members of an innocent family traveling in the second vehicle—including sisters Alma, Niamh, and Ellie Kinsella, alongside a seven-year-old boy—sustained severe injuries. The family was on their way to Dublin Airport to catch a flight to England for a wedding. All four survivors were hospitalized following the crash.
A Dangerous Social Media Trend and Prior Spree
Security sources and Gardaí revealed that the teenagers were suspected of involvement in a fortnight-long wave of burglaries, car thefts, and anti-social behavior across the Kildare, Carlow, and Dublin regions. Investigators noted a growing, reckless social media trend among youth gangs attempting to “one-up” each other by filming dangerous driving maneuvers, police evasions, and wrong-way motorway runs for online views. Prior to the fatal crash, clips had been shared online featuring footage from inside a vehicle captioned with the words “wrong way.”
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly condemned the reckless behavior, highlighting the devastating consequences of irresponsible driving driven by the pursuit of social media attention. An investigation into the collision and the vehicle’s movements prior to the impact remains ongoing.
