Although its future may have gotten a disappointing update last year, Annika is now heading to a brand new streaming home.

It’s been confirmed that Annika will be landing on Netflix on Sunday 16 August – just over a week away.

So, it’s time to get the series saved on the streamer so that you can be reminded to tune in on the day it drops.

Up until now, Annika has only been available to stream on BBC iPlayer, but with the Nicola Walker series now finding a home on Netflix, there are bound to be plenty of new fans tuning into the series for the first time.

For the uninitiated among us, Annika is headed up by Unforgotten and The Split star Nicola Walker as the titular detective who heads up the fictional Glasgow-based Marine Homicide Unit.

The series is based on the BBC Radio 4 audio drama Annika Strandhed, in which Walker also starred, and regularly sees Annika breaking the fourth wall to talk directly to the viewer.

The show debuted on U&Alibi with its first season back in 2021 and then season 2 in 2023. But it was last year that it was confirmed that Annika would be no more, with UKTV confirming to Radio Times that a renewal announcement for Annika is unlikely.

A spokesperson commented: “We are incredibly proud of the success of Annika on U&Alibi, but there are no current plans for a third series.”

The drama saw Walker joined by the likes of Doctor Who stars Varada Sethu and Paul McGann in the cast, whilst other series stars included Katie Leung, Jamie Sives, Ukweli Roach and Kate Dickie.

More recently, Walker has been seen in shows like Sky’s Mary & George and Disney+’s Alice and Steve.

Speaking about her most recent role in the latter, Walker told Radio Times: “It’s nice to bring the chaos. I’ve played a lot of more obviously dramatic parts, but for me, this is very true to real life.

“I think the way Sophie [Goodhart, series creator] writes is something that I really recognise. In real life, you can suddenly behave in extraordinary, extreme ways, because of the emotional situation.

“So it always seemed very truthful to me, what all of these characters do, which is why I think you go along with them all.”
