Former TV News Anchor Pleads Guilty to Murdering Her 80-Year-Old Mother

Former television news anchor Angelynn “Angie” Mock has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of her mother, Anita Avers, on Halloween 2025.
Mock, 48, entered the plea before District Court Judge Faith Johnson in connection with the Oct. 31 death of Avers, 80, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office announced on Friday, Aug. 21.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, Mock faces a presumptive sentence of life in prison. She would become eligible for parole after serving 25 years, according to prosecutors.
Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for Oct. 5 at 11 a.m.
Police found Avers with multiple stab wounds
Officers found Avers suffering from multiple stab wounds. Mock was taken into custody a short time later.
According to an affidavit, an officer discovered several kitchen-style knives and a cheese grater arranged on a pillow beside Avers on the bed.
Investigators said Mock provided conflicting explanations for the events that preceded her mother’s death.
Mock claimed she acted to protect herself
In one account, Mock told investigators that she entered her mother’s bedroom and discovered sharpened knives on the bed.
She alleged that Avers then followed her while carrying a knife and attempted to fight her. Mock said she stabbed her mother to “save herself,” according to the affidavit.
Mock offered a different version in another interview.
She claimed she had been discussing an upcoming job interview when Avers began sharpening knives and said she was jealous of her.
“I had to kill her, she wasn’t going to stop,” Mock allegedly told investigators.
Authorities also said Mock spoke to herself after the killing and made remarks suggesting that she believed her mother was the devil.
Mental health diagnoses detailed in affidavit
Mock’s stepfather told investigators that she had initially been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was subsequently diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, according to the affidavit.
In January, a judge found Mock incompetent to stand trial following a court-ordered evaluation.
She was sent to Larned State Hospital for additional evaluation and treatment.
The case resumed in July after a judge determined that Mock had become competent to stand trial.
Mock previously worked in television news
Mock worked as a morning news anchor at KTVI Fox 2 in St. Louis between 2011 and 2015.
Earlier in her career, she served as a sports reporter for KLKN in Lincoln, Nebraska, from 2002 to 2004.
Her guilty plea removes the need for a trial. She now awaits sentencing in October, when the court is expected to consider the plea agreement carrying life imprisonment with parole eligibility after 25 years.
