California School Bus Erupts Into Chaos as Children Escape Through Windows and Parent Is Arrested

A California school bus became the scene of a tense confrontation after students were reportedly kept aboard for around an hour, prompting children to climb through windows and angry parents to demand their release.

The incident unfolded Monday along Highway 49 near Russell Road in Calaveras County. Video from the scene shows a student squeezing through an open window before a parent later climbs inside through another window and confronts the driver.

Authorities said the disruption began with concerns about unsafe student behaviour and eventually required police intervention.

Driver reportedly ordered students to remain seated

A 12-year-old passenger said the children initially began shouting because they were excited to leave the bus.

According to the student, the situation changed after the vehicle stopped and another child climbed through a window. The driver then ordered everyone to sit down and close the windows.

Other reports said a student had attempted to climb out before the bus came to a complete stop.

The driver reportedly informed the passengers that they would have to remain aboard until law enforcement arrived.

As the delay continued, several students called their families. Parents soon gathered around the bus, and the atmosphere became increasingly chaotic.

Mother told her son to climb out

Nichole Wellington said her son sounded frightened when he contacted her, leading her to drive directly to the bus.

When she arrived, Wellington demanded that the driver open the door and release her child. She said the driver refused, so she eventually instructed her son to leave through a window.

Wellington later argued that the confrontation might have unfolded differently if the driver had released children to the parents who were already present.

Footage shows students using open windows to get out as other children remain aboard. At one point, an adult also climbs through a window and approaches the driver.

Another parent supported keeping children aboard

Not every parent agreed that the driver should immediately release the students.

Rebecca Glover, whose two children were on the bus, said she told them to remain in their seats when she reached the scene.

Glover argued that those responsible for the bus had to consider the safety of every passenger, rather than responding only to individual parents demanding their children.

Parent arrested after bus door glass shattered

The confrontation escalated when a parent allegedly struck the bus door and broke its glass.

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office said the parent was taken into custody for vandalism at the school district’s request.

Deputies also confirmed that several students were reported to have climbed through open windows. They warned that school bus windows should only be used as emergency exits.

The sheriff’s office stressed that bus safety rules are designed to protect children and must be followed by both students and adults.

Calaveras Unified Superintendent Kassie Meeks said concerns about student conduct triggered the incident before the situation escalated to the point that law enforcement was needed.
