Acclaimed British Gangster Classic Airs on Film4 Tonight

One of British cinema’s most highly regarded gangster films is returning to television tonight, bringing together Ray Winstone, Ben Kingsley and Ian McShane in a tense crime story driven by unforgettable performances.

Released in 2000, Sexy Beast marked Jonathan Glazer’s directorial debut, years before he made Under the Skin and The Zone of Interest. More than two decades later, the film retains an 87% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and remains widely recognised as a defining entry in the British gangster genre.

A retired criminal pulled back into his old life

Ray Winstone stars as Gary “Gal” Dove, a former criminal who has left Britain behind for a peaceful retirement on the Costa del Sol.

Gal shares his quiet new life with his wife, DeeDee, but the tranquillity ends when Don Logan unexpectedly arrives. Played by Ben Kingsley, Don has come to persuade—or force—Gal to return to London for one final bank robbery.

The operation has been organised by crime boss Teddy Bass, portrayed by Ian McShane.

Much of the film’s tension comes from the battle of wills between Gal and Don. Gal is determined to remain retired, while Don becomes increasingly aggressive as he refuses to accept his former associate’s answer.

The confrontation escalates further when Gal suggests that Don’s visit may also be connected to his obsession with Jackie, the wife of one of Gal’s friends. That accusation drives the story toward some of its most consequential moments.

Ben Kingsley’s terrifying transformation

While the film’s cast has received widespread praise, much of the acclaim has centred on Kingsley’s performance as Don Logan.

The role marked a dramatic departure from the actor’s Oscar-winning portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi. As Don, Kingsley created an unpredictable, eccentric and deeply intimidating gangster who has since been described as one of British cinema’s most memorable villains.

One reviewer compared the character to Joe Pesci’s role in Goodfellas but argued that Kingsley’s performance was even more bizarre and eccentric.

Other viewers have praised the film’s disciplined screenplay and direction, while singling out Kingsley and McShane for their commanding performances.

Another reviewer described Don as one of the most frightening characters ever shown on screen, noting that the film remains filled with menace even during its quieter scenes.

Awards recognition for Kingsley and Glazer

Kingsley’s performance earned Best Supporting Actor honours from several critics’ organisations, including the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the Boston Society of Film Critics and the Toronto Film Critics Association.

He also received nominations at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Academy Awards.

The film itself won Best Director and Best Screenplay at the British Independent Film Awards.

Rotten Tomatoes credited the performances with helping Sexy Beast distinguish itself from other films in the British gangster genre.

The story later expanded to television

Sexy Beast continues to be regarded as one of the finest British films of its era.

Its reputation eventually led to a prequel television series, released in 2024, which explored Don Logan’s earlier life and provided additional background to the character made famous by Kingsley.
