Prince Harry’s Royal Family plot could be ‘nightmare for William’
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could be hoping to secure a ‘half in, half out’ return to the Royal Family, but the future King is unlikely to be happy.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s attempts to carve out a “half in, half out” role in the Royal Family could prove to be a “nightmare” for Prince William. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex reunited their two children with King Charles for the first time in four years this month in a thawing of relations that has been interpreted as a step towards the couple re-entering the fold in some capacity.
TalkTV host Mark Dolan branded the suggestion a “nightmare” for Prince William, who is not thought to be on speaking terms with his brother following years of estrangement. Broadcaster Sarah Louise Robinson told him on his morning show that the “half in, half out” model was expressly banned by the late Queen Elizabeth II before her death, but may not be so strictly enforced by the King, who has more of a “soft touch” approach.
“Meghan and Harry wanted to be able to cash in on their royal titles and lineage in California and make money, and then scoot into Britain as and when they desired in order to boost their images with philanthropy,” she said.
“The Queen was a very astute diplomat and she saw through it and she said absolutely not, this is not allowed.
“[But] through the King’s vulnerability and softness, Meghan and Harry have managed to inveigle, dip a toe in, and get a little bit back in with the King and therefore within the royal fold.”
Harry’s rift from the UK royals was driven by criticism levied at Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William and Princess Kate in his Oprah interview, Netflix documentary and autobiography Spare after moving to the US six years ago.
Among other claims, the Duke of Sussex said Charles was jealous of Meghan and Kate, did not hug him when he told him his mother Diana, Princess of Wales had died and suggested his father was “never made” for single parenthood but “to be fair, he tried”.
He also claimed in his memoir that William physically attacked him and pushed him into a dog bowl.
The Prince of Wales did not join Harry, Meghan, their children and the King and Queen at Highgrove House earlier this month, with the reunion taking place during the same afternoon he was playing in a charity polo match in Windsor.
