As Meghan Markle rings in her 45th birthday, royal fans may be wondering: how will the royal family be marking her special day? Meghan and her husband Prince Harry decided to step back from their royal duties in 2020—and according to royal experts, this means that the royal family will likely forgo any public tributes to the As Ever founder.

However, this doesn’t mean that the family won’t wish Meghan a happy birthday in private. “The king is a scrupulously polite man, and I’m quite certain he would wish to send his daughter-in-law his birthday wishes,” royal commentator Tom Sykes told Page Six.

Royal expert Kinsey Schofield added that if Charles were to send Meghan happy birthday wishes, they would likely be sent “quietly” and “through his staff.”

“Charles has always had a compassionate streak, and despite everything that’s happened, he has rarely gone out of his way to be overtly unkind toward Meghan,” she added. “A discreet gesture would be entirely in keeping with his character.”

As Harry and his brother Prince William have been in a widely reported feud and allegedly not on speaking terms for several years, experts do not expect William or his wife Kate Middleton to be reaching out to his sister-in-law.

“I don’t think they will be expecting any [birthday wishes] from Prince William and Catherine,” said Schofield.

“The relationship simply isn’t there anymore,” Schofield added. “They believe Meghan played a significant role in the breakdown of family trust, and I think any suggestion that they’re secretly exchanging birthday wishes belongs more in the realm of wishful thinking than reality.”

Because Meghan and Harry left behind royal life, Sykes believes that no public tribute will be made. “Birthday wishes to a private citizen would be sent privately,” he said, adding, “There’s absolutely no way anything will be put on social media feeds or anything like that.”

The lack of public message is “protocol,” added Schofield.

Although it is unlikely that royal fans will see any public tributes to Meghan for her birthday, she shared her own post marking the big day. Next to a black and white photo of herself in a one-piece bathing suit swinging from a tree into a pool, Meghan wrote, “Thank you for the birthday love! 🎈”

Meghan’s brand As Ever also shared a tribute, writing, “Happy birthday to our founder, @meghan.”
