KING CHARLES SPOTTED AT BALMORAL AS HARRY & MEGHAN’S UK RETURN LOOMS
King Charles has been seen at Balmoral for the first time since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s shock decision to return to the UK, as senior members of the Royal Family gather for their traditional summer break.
The King was pictured driving between Balmoral and Braemar, while Prince William and Kate were also seen leaving the estate alongside other members of the family. Prince Edward, James, Mike Tindall, Zara and Princess Anne were among those also present.
The timing has drawn attention because Harry and Meghan are preparing to move back to Britain with Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, after six years in California. The children are expected to begin school in the UK in September, although the couple are not planning to resume royal duties.
A ROYAL SUMMER BREAK WITH AN UNEXPECTED SHADOW
The Balmoral gathering has inevitably revived memories of the 2020 Sandringham summit, when Harry and Meghan announced their decision to step back from senior royal life.
Sources have described the Royal Family’s approach as “business as usual,” while William and Kate have not publicly commented on the Sussexes’ return.
The King was reportedly informed of Harry and Meghan’s plans only days before the announcement became public. Harry and Meghan, meanwhile, are expected to establish themselves at a private, non-royal residence outside London while retaining links to their homes in the US and Portugal.
Their decision to return has also reignited questions about Harry’s relationship with his family. Harry has previously spoken publicly about his concerns over security in Britain and fought a lengthy legal battle over his protection arrangements.
That issue remains unresolved. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has described the couple’s security arrangements as a “private matter,” while reports indicate that questions remain over exactly what protection Harry, Meghan and their children will receive.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Harry and Meghan are not returning as working royals. Meghan is expected to continue her business activities, while Harry will focus on charitable work in the UK. Their children, however, are set to spend more time in Britain as they begin their education there.
The move follows a private family meeting in July, when Harry, Meghan and their children spent time with King Charles at Highgrove. It marked an important moment after years of strained relations and limited contact between the Sussex children and their grandfather.
For now, the Royal Family is carrying on with its Balmoral summer routine.
