Fans of chilling detective dramas are urged to watch one of many Welsh crime thrillers full of unexpected twists, which has been hailed “superb TV”.
The BBC series, which originally aired in 2023, is based on the novels by Mo Hayder and it follows a detective who believes his neighbour murdered his 10-year-old brother in the ’90s.
Wolf is the series in question and it stars Ukweli Roach in the lead role as DI Jack Caffrey, with the BBC teasing: “Life is full of surprises. A gruesome shock for a wealthy family, and a young detective with horrors of his own. It’s a deliciously bloody, twisting race against time.”
Now, the series, which was filmed in Monmouthshire and Cardiff, is available to watch on Apple TV and it has been hailed “an absolute gem” by fans.
They have spotted some familiar locations including Neath Abbey, Penarth, Pontyclun, and Ewenny Priory in Bridgend.
The series, which also stars Iwan Rheon as Molina and Sacha Dhawan as Honey, tells two different stories as it flits between Caffrey’s own dark endeavours as well as the lives of the Anchor-Ferrers family – a wealthy , isolated family in Monmouthshire who find themselves victimised, trapped and terrorised by someone’s cruel games.
Fans have taken to IMDb reviews to share their thoughts on the series, with one calling it “compulsive viewing”, adding: “It’s an unusual mix of drama and horror, it’s a real mind bender, on more than one occasion you’ll be left scratching your head in wonder… Mind-blowing, outrageous, gruesome and fun, bravo.”

Another called it “absolutely seamless”, adding: “It’s dark comedy at its best and the acting is of top-grade quality. The characters are so well fleshed out and the story is effortlessly nerve-wracking and filled with a mix of whodunnit and a little horror to shock the audience.”
A third fan compared it to hit shows like Luther, explaining: “Luther meets Funny Games is the best way I can describe this wonderful adaptation. I didn’t know what to expect, but seeing Iwan and Sacha in the cast, that’s all it [took to] hook me in. Add in a huge dose of spine-chilling tension, hilarious comedic timing and a phenomenal performance by Ukweli Roach and you can’t go wrong.
“I love twisty thrillers and even more so, I love being scared. This had everything I could possibly want.”
Iwan Rheon, who plays Molina in the “brilliant” series, said it was lovely to be back working in Wales at the time of production.
In August 2023, goodto.com reported the actor had said: “Obviously, I’m Welsh and grew up in Wales, so it has a very dear place in my heart.

“It’s been really great to get to use the landscapes here; Wales has quite a wide variety of landscapes, so you can really make it look like anything.
“It’s a really beautiful place to film. I think more and more things are being made here, so the crews are fantastic – great professionals in every department, which is amazing. Wales is just as good as anywhere to film.”
