NEED TO KNOW

  • Prince William thoughtfully kept Kate Middleton dry from the rain using an umbrella
  • The moment, which took place after Peter Phillips’ wedding ceremony, was caught on camera
  • It wasn’t the first time that the Prince and Princess of Wales shared an umbrella

Kate Middleton found a real-life Prince Charming in her husband, Prince William.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, both 44, were guests at the June 6 wedding of his cousin Peter Phillips, celebrating his marriage to Harriet Sperling. Although the U.K. is experiencing a summer full of heatwaves, the weather was windy and rainy on the wedding day, prompting guests to use umbrellas as they made their way out of All Saints Church in Kemble after the ceremony.

In a moment that almost went unnoticed but was caught on camera and shared by a fan on social media, William and Kate shared one umbrella as they headed to their car. Prince William chivalrously shielded his wife from the rain, then closed the umbrella before Princess Kate ducked under an archway.

From there, an aide popped open an umbrella and held it over Kate, who gave a smile and a wave to the cheering well-wishers gathered outside before sitting in the passenger seat of a waiting vehicle.

It’s far from the first time that Prince William has kept his wife dry from the rain with an umbrella.

Back in 2019, the prince similarly shielded Kate with an umbrella during a downpour at Royal Ascot. William held the umbrella as the couple stood under it together at the horse racing event.

Prince William has also been known to hold Princess Kate’s coat, among other sweet moves that show his affection for his wife.

Prince William and Peter, 48, grew up together, sharing royal family holidays, church outings, milestones and events like balcony appearances at Trooping the Colour. Now, their children have been seen together, both at family events and more private outings.

Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, previously told PEOPLE, “There is a closeness with the Phillips’ kids, which is great to see. William and Peter Phillips were close when William was a teenager, and that has continued into the next generation.”

Despite their close relationship, Prince William missed Peter’s 2008 wedding to Autumn Kelly. While William attended another wedding ceremony for a friend in Kenya, Kate attended Peter and Autumn’s wedding without her then-boyfriend.

The Prince and Princess of Wales joined King Charles, Queen Camilla, the mother of the groom Princess Anne and more members of the royal family in celebrating Harriet and Peter’s wedding day. Harriet, 45, wore a lace gown by Emilia Wickstead and topped the look with the Pragnell Tiara, reportedly borrowing the headpiece from the jeweler behind her engagement ring.

Harriet’s gorgeous gown drew comparison to Princess Kate’s own bridal style, as both women opted for lace bodices and long, flowing veils for their royal weddings.

Emilia Wickstead has also been a go-to designer in Kate’s rotation for years, but her 2011 wedding dress was designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen and featured a fuller skirt, among other intricate differences.
