Prince Harry and Meghan pledge not to overshadow Prince George’s first day at Eton
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly planning to avoid any public appearances or announcements on September 1, ensuring that attention remains on Prince George as he begins his education at Eton College.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to the UK with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet on Wednesday, arriving at Birmingham Airport only days before the 13-year-old prince reaches the significant milestone.
Sussexes reportedly give assurance to King Charles
Royal broadcaster Neil Sean said Harry and Meghan had assured King Charles that they would not disrupt or divert attention from important royal occasions, particularly George’s first day at Eton.
“The Sussexes have assured the King that they will not hijack or derail major royal events, notably the first day of school term for Prince George at Eton,” Sean told Fox News Digital.
He added that neither Harry nor Meghan is expected to release photographs or make public comments that day.
George’s move to Eton was confirmed earlier this year in an official announcement from Prince William and Princess Catherine. The young royal will follow in his father’s footsteps at the prestigious school, where Harry also studied between 1998 and 2003.
A significant moment for the future king
Royal commentator Amanda Matta said George’s arrival at Eton represents more than a change of school because of his future position within the monarchy.
“Prince George’s start at Eton isn’t just a personal milestone; it’s the beginning of his public-facing path as heir to the throne,” she explained.
Matta said the Palace is highly protective of the attention surrounding George and would want to prevent competing headlines—particularly those involving the Sussexes—from distracting from the image Prince William and Princess Catherine have established for their family.
The start of September will also bring changes for the other royal children. Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, are reportedly preparing to begin at new schools as they settle into life in Britain.
Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, meanwhile, will return to Lambrook School in Berkshire, which George previously attended.
