Keri Russell Leaves the 2026 Emmys Empty-Handed as Partner Matthew Rhys Makes History With Two Wins in One Night

Keri Russell left the 2026 Emmy Awards still waiting for the first Emmy victory of her career. Her partner, Matthew Rhys, experienced a very different night, winning two major acting awards and setting a new record in the process.

Russell entered the ceremony nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her performance as Kate Wyler in The Diplomat. She was also nominated as an executive producer when the show competed for Outstanding Drama Series.

Neither nomination resulted in a victory. After eight career nominations, Russell has yet to take home an Emmy.

Matthew Rhys Wins Two Lead Acting Awards

While Russell’s wait continued, Rhys emerged as one of the evening’s biggest winners.

The 51-year-old actor won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for playing Mayor Tom Loftis in Widow’s Bay. He later returned to the stage to accept Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his portrayal of Nile Jarvis in The Beast in Me.

Those victories made Rhys the first person to win two lead acting Emmys at the same ceremony. The achievement carried additional significance because his 2018 victory for The Americans completed a rare sweep across drama, comedy and limited-series lead acting categories. Entertainment Weekly

Widow’s Bay also won Outstanding Comedy Series, giving Rhys another victory as one of its executive producers.

One Name Was Missing From Both Speeches

During his acceptance remarks, Rhys thanked colleagues, family members and his native Wales. However, Keri Russell’s name did not appear in either of his televised acting speeches.

The omission attracted attention because of the couple’s long personal and professional history. There is no evidence, however, that it indicated any disagreement between them or that Rhys deliberately excluded his partner.

Russell and Rhys met while working together on The Americans and began dating in 2014. They attended the 2026 Emmys together in coordinating black outfits and share a son. Vanity Fair

When Rhys won his first Emmy for The Americans in 2018, he thanked Russell directly during his acceptance speech.

Eight Nominations and Still Waiting

Russell’s lack of an Emmy victory does not diminish her standing in television. Eight nominations reflect sustained recognition across different stages of her career, from The Americans to The Diplomat.

The 2026 ceremony nevertheless produced a striking contrast: Russell remained without a win while the partner who once shared the screen with her entered Emmy history with an extraordinary night.
