Queen Camilla Opens Up for the First Time About the “Torment” of Keeping King Charles’s Cancer Diagnosis Secret
Queen Camilla has spoken publicly for the first time about the immense emotional challenge of keeping King Charles’s cancer diagnosis a secret from the public while carrying out her royal duties.

A Secret Burden During Royal Engagements
In a new collaborative short film released by Buckingham Palace and the cancer support charity Maggie’s to mark its 30th anniversary, the Queen reflected on visiting the Maggie’s centre at London’s Royal Free Hospital on January 31, 2024. At the time, she alone with the royal family knew that the King had been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer, though the public was only told he was being treated for an enlarged prostate. The palace publicly announced his cancer diagnosis five days later, on February 5, 2024.
Speaking with Maggie’s chief executive Dame Laura Lee at Clarence House, Camilla described the experience of keeping the news hidden as “quite difficult,” admitting that she was “just longing to let it out but obviously I couldn’t.”
“I almost said something but, you know, I felt that it wasn’t the time to say,” the Queen shared. She added that the experience gave her a profound new perspective: “It had never really come back to roost at home, and suddenly your husband is diagnosed, and you think ‘Goodness I’ve been talking to all these people and now I’m the one with some relation who’s got to help to look after my poor husband and try and understand it all.'”

The King’s Resilience and Continued Public Duties
Reflecting on how the monarch handled the health crisis, the Queen praised his unyielding determination, noting that he refused to slow down or alter his relentless work ethic.
“Nothing stopped him. He just said ‘This is my way. I’m going to cope with it,'” Camilla said in the video.
King Charles returned to public-facing duties in April 2024, less than three months after beginning treatment. Palace officials noted late last year that the 77-year-old monarch’s treatment schedule has been successfully reduced as his health continues in a very positive direction.
Dame Laura Lee praised the Queen for her courage and openness, noting that the royal couple’s transparency has helped encourage others—particularly men—to seek help and talk more openly about their health and the emotional toll on family members.
