BBC’s Jane Austen Spin-Off Becomes a Surprise Hit as ‘Forgotten’ Bennet Sister Finally Gets Her Own Story

For more than two centuries, Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy have dominated the conversation whenever Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is mentioned.

But a BBC period drama has taken a very different approach — pushing Elizabeth aside and handing the spotlight to the Bennet sister readers were rarely encouraged to notice.

The Other Bennet Sister follows Mary Bennet, the awkward, bookish middle daughter who spent much of Austen’s original story overshadowed by her more charismatic sisters. This time, Mary is no background character: she gets an entire 10-part story of her own.

And the gamble appears to have paid off. The first series attracted 7.3 million UK viewers during its first four weeks, according to the BBC, while its success has already secured the drama a three-part Christmas special.

The Bennet Sister Everyone Forgot

Based on Janice Hadlow’s acclaimed 2020 novel rather than directly on a newly discovered Austen work, The Other Bennet Sister revisits the familiar world of Longbourn from Mary’s perspective.

Ella Bruccoleri plays Mary, who is anxious, socially awkward and far removed from the polished romantic heroine traditionally placed at the center of a Regency drama.

The opening episodes overlap with events Pride and Prejudice fans already know, but seen through Mary’s eyes. The story then moves beyond Austen’s original plot, sending her away from her sisters and toward London and the Lake District as she begins searching for an identity — and eventually romance — of her own.

It is a clever reversal of one of literature’s most famous families.

Audiences have spent generations wanting to be Elizabeth Bennet. This adaptation asks what life might have felt like for the sister standing quietly beside her.

An Impressive Cast Returns to Longbourn

Bruccoleri is surrounded by an extensive British cast.

Gavin & Stacey star Ruth Jones takes on the formidable Mrs Bennet, while Richard E. Grant plays Mr Bennet. Poppy Gilbert appears as Elizabeth, Maddie Close as Jane, Grace Hogg-Robinson as Lydia and Molly Wright as Kitty.

Indira Varma and Richard Coyle play Mrs and Mr Gardiner, while Dónal Finn and Laurie Davidson become important figures as Mary’s life expands beyond Longbourn.

There is even a particularly satisfying connection for longtime Pride and Prejudice viewers: Lucy Briers, who portrayed Mary Bennet in the BBC’s beloved 1995 adaptation, returns to Austen’s world here as Mrs Hill, a confidante to the new Mary.

Why Mary Works as an Unlikely Heroine

What makes the series stand apart is that Mary is not transformed overnight into another Elizabeth.

She begins as the odd one out — uncomfortable in company, anxious and painfully aware that she lacks the qualities for which her sisters receive attention.

That gives the drama something different to explore. Marriage remains enormously important in Regency society, but Mary’s story is also about learning whether her worth has to depend on being admired by everyone around her.

BBC screenwriter Sarah Quintrell has described Mary as the family outsider, while Bruccoleri has called her an “atypical period drama heroine.”

That awkwardness becomes the point rather than a flaw the series needs to hide.

A Surprise Success for the BBC

The Other Bennet Sister premiered on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on March 15, with the first five episodes released initially and the remaining five following later that month.

Across its first four weeks, the drama reached 7.3 million UK viewers and also found audiences in the US and Canada.

Its reception has been strong enough that Mary’s story is already continuing.

A three-part Christmas special has been commissioned, with Bruccoleri returning as Mary and Sarah Quintrell writing all three episodes from storylines by Hadlow. Filming, largely in Wales, had wrapped by early September.

The show has also landed on critics’ year-to-date television roundups, including The Guardian’s selection of notable television from 2026.

Jane Austen’s World — From a Very Different Corner

There is an obvious risk in expanding one of the most cherished novels in English literature. Elizabeth and Darcy have been revisited so many times that another trip to Longbourn could easily have felt unnecessary.

The Other Bennet Sister finds its reason for existing by looking in the opposite direction.

Instead of retelling the great romance everyone remembers, it asks what happened to the woman barely anyone was watching.

And more than 200 years after Mary Bennet was condemned to the edge of her sisters’ story, the BBC has finally moved her into the middle of the frame.

The Other Bennet Sister is available on BBC iPlayer in the UK; BritBox launched the series in the US and Canada in May.
