A haunting new historical drama has quickly found an audience on Netflix, climbing to seventh place on the platform’s UK chart shortly after its release.
Lead Children is a six-part Polish-language series inspired by the true story of Dr. Jolanta Wadowska-Król, a physician who discovered widespread lead poisoning among children living near an industrial plant in 1970s Poland.
The drama follows her efforts to understand what was making so many children sick — and the resistance she encountered when her findings brought her into conflict with the communist authorities.

Determined to protect the affected children, the young doctor finds herself confronting not only an environmental health crisis but also a political system capable of standing in the way of her work.

Critic Clint Worthington also noted similarities to Chernobyl, pointing to the production’s grim cinematography, period costumes and restrained performances.
The response has helped Lead Children gain momentum on Netflix, reaching No. 7 on the UK chart shortly after arriving on the service.
